Wind Cave National Park (12/2003 - 04/2004)
ancient hornless rhinoceros - Subhyracodon occidentalis

In July 2003, park staff at Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota working in conjunction with a paleontologist from the Geologic Resource Division were on a routine investigation of fossil sites in the park when something caught their attention. It was a very large set of fossil teeth. Careful study revealed that these were the teeth of an ancient hornless rhinoceros - Subhyracodon occidentalis. ...more
