International Driver's License

If you are an American planning to travel abroad and are seeking information on how to obtain an international driver's license, please see:

If you have specific questions (which aren't answered by searching the site listed above) regarding driver license data, please phone 202-366-0160.

If you are a foreign driver who is moving to the U.S., you will need to obtain a driver's license in the state in which you will be living. Each state has its own Department of Transportation (DOT). A list of state web sites and state DOTs, with contact information, is available at:

To obtain an international driver's license for vacation/holiday visits to the U.S., please contact your own government.
