HHS Awards $7.5 Million to Help 15 Communities Extend Health Care Services to Low-Income and Uninsured Americans
HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced 15 new grants totaling $7.5 million that will help an estimated 68,000 Americans, including many without health insurance, obtain comprehensive health care services.
Today's grants continue President Bush's five-year plan to help communities across the country create comprehensive health care centers. Launched in 2002, President Bush's initiative will add 1,200 new and expanded health center sites and increase the number of people served annually from about 10 million to 16 million by 2006. In 2002 and 2003, HHS funded nearly 220 new center sites and expanded capacity at more than 250 other sites.
"We've greatly expanded the capacity of health centers over the past two years. As a result, more than 2 million additional Americans now have access to health care services," Secretary Thompson said. "Today's grants build upon these efforts and will extend the health care safety net to more Americans who otherwise might not have access to health care."
Health centers deliver preventive and primary care to patients regardless of their ability to pay. Almost 40 percent of the patients treated at health centers have no insurance coverage, and others have inadequate coverage. Charges for health care services are set according to income.
HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) manages the Consolidated Health Center Program, which funds a national network of more than 3,600 clinics comprised of community health centers, migrant health centers, health care for the homeless centers and public housing primary care centers. These centers served about 12.5 million people in 2003.
"We started with a clear mandate from President Bush and Secretary Thompson to find the best way to get health care to the millions of vulnerable individuals and families who live outside the medical mainstream," HRSA Administrator Elizabeth M. Duke said. "With these grants, we'll serve more patients at more health centers in more communities across America."
