HRSA Announces $49 Million in Health Professions Grants

HRSA has released $49.7 million in grants to support training in the health professions workforce.  By program area, the awards are:

  • Centers of Excellence grants enable health professions training programs to enlarge their applicant pools; improve the academic performance of under-represented minority students; raise recruitment and retention rates of minority faculty; and enhance graduates’ ability to provide health care services to medically underserved people (total award: $11,855,022);
  • Health Careers Opportunity Program grants help students from disadvantaged backgrounds develop the skills necessary to enter the health professions (total award: $10,299,463);
  • Residency Training in Primary Care grants support medical residency training programs that prepare graduates to enter primary care practice (total award: $6,233,928);
  • Faculty Development in Primary Care grants help train physicians who plan to teach in family medicine, general internal medicine or general pediatrics; and provide traineeships and fellowships to participating physicians (total award: $5,858,788);
  • Predoctoral Training in Primary Care grants help schools of medicine meet the cost of projects to plan, develop and operate or participate in approved predoctoral training programs (total award: $3,600,174);
  • Quentin N. Burdick Program for Rural Interdisciplinary Training grants support health professions education and training in rural underserved communities and help recruit and retain health care practitioners in rural areas (total award: $3,371,486);
  • Academic Administrative Units in Primary Care grants establish or expand an academic unit in family medicine or develop a research infrastructure within an academic unit in family medicine (total award: $3,035,019);
  • Residencies/Advanced Education in the Practice of General Dentistry/Residencies in the Practice of Pediatric Dentistry grants help dental schools plan, develop or operate programs; increase the number of training opportunities; and provide financial assistance to residents in postdoctoral general and pediatric dentistry (total award: $1,850,660);
  • Public Health Traineeship grants train individuals pursuing health professions experiencing severe shortages, such as epidemiology, environmental health, biostatistics, toxicology, nutrition and maternal and child health (total award: $1,725,810);
  • Physician Assistant Training in Primary Care grants fund projects that support physician assistant training programs to reach underserved populations (total award: $1,205,814); and
  • Allied Health Special Projects grants expand or establish programs to increase the number of individuals trained in allied health professions (total award: $711,946).
