Internet Seminar Focuses on Childhood Obesity

A HRSA-sponsored seminar on Overweight and Obesity in Children and Adolescents, accessible online and by phone, is scheduled for Thursday, April 4, between 2-3 p.m. Eastern Time.

The session, made possible through the Maternal and Child Health Bureau’s DataSpeak technology, will examine the issue of overweight and obese children and adolescents, whose numbers in the United States have nearly doubled since 1980.

Van Hubbard, M.D., Ph.D., director of the National Institutes of Health’s Division of Nutrition Research Coordination, will provide highlights of the Surgeon General's 2001 report on the topic.  Bonnie Spear, Ph.D., R.D., associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will describe Bright Futures guidelines for promoting physical activity among children and adolescents.  Bright Futures in Practice: Physical Activity is available through the HRSA Information Center by calling 1-888-ASKHRSA.

The next DataSpeak conference on the health of U.S. immigrants is set for June 13.
