HHS Awards $1 Million to Help Students Become Nurse Anesthetists

The Health Resources and Services Administration today awarded $1 million in one-year grants to help students training to become nurse anesthetists pay for their education.

“Last year, these grants helped almost 1,400 students pursue an advanced education degree,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson.  “At a time when the number of nurse anesthetists is declining, these awards make it possible for students with limited financial resources to follow their dreams and complete their training."

Sixty-six colleges, universities, hospitals and medical centers will share the Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship Awards.  Those institutions will distribute grant dollars to qualified students, who may use the funds to pay all or part of their tuition, books, fees and reasonable living expenses.  Eligible students must be enrolled in advanced degree programs to become nurse anesthetists.

The Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship grant program is funded under Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act and is administered by HRSA’s Bureau of Health Professions.

HRSA is the lead HHS agency for improving access to health care for individuals and families nationwide.
