HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson
today awarded more than $15 million in grants to strengthen
the health care safety net for Alaskans. Secretary Thompson
announced 23 new grants totaling $10 million and another $5.4
million in continued funding to eight organizations under the
Alaska Frontier Health Project.
“Alaska residents face some of the most extreme
barriers to obtaining health care services in America, the greatest
of these barriers being isolation,” Secretary Thompson said.
“These grants will strengthen the health care safety net for
thousands of Alaskans by bringing needed health care services
to their communities.”
The grants announced today include:
- 15 grants to create or expand health center sites under
the Community Health Center and Health Care for the Homeless
Programs,
- 5 grants to initiate or expand mental health or oral health
care services,
- 1 grant to support integrated services delivery,
- 1 grant to support statewide technical assistance and community
development, and
- 8 grants to continue activities initiated last year.
The goal of the Alaska Frontier Health Project
is to improve access to primary health care and reduce health
disparities among underserved populations throughout the state.
Because of its tremendous size, Alaska residents often live
in small, isolated communities separated from others by long
distances and geographic barriers. These funds will increase
access to health care services in areas where such care has
not been available.
The grants are part of President Bush’s multi-year
Health Centers Initiative to add 1,200 new and expanded health
center sites over five years and increase the number of patients
treated from 11 million to 16 million. Today’s grants are expected
to bring health services to more than 31,500 Alaska residents.
HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration
(HRSA) manages the Consolidated Health Center Program through
its Bureau of Primary Health Care. The program funds a national
network of community health centers, migrant health centers,
health care for the homeless centers, public housing primary
care centers and school-based health centers. Lists of grant
recipients and awards are attached.
