HRSA Awards $15.7 Million to Provide HIV/AIDS Care
and Services to Women, Children and Families

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced 19 new grants totaling $15.7 million to provide comprehensive HIV/AIDS care and services for children, youth, women and their families.  In addition, HHS renewed funding for 54 grants totaling $42.9 million.

“HIV/AIDS is occurring more and more frequently among females — last year, 25 percent of all new cases were among women,” said Secretary Thompson.  “We have a growing need to ensure that these women and their children have access to the latest support services and treatments available.  That’s what these grants will do.”

The grants are awarded under Title IV of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act.  Title IV programs specifically address the needs of women, children, youth and families by providing care that deals with the entire family.  This includes primary and specialty medical care, psychosocial services, logistical support and coordination, and outreach and case management.  Programs also are designed to increase access to clinical trials and research.

“Experience and research alike show us that patients have better outcomes when they are part of comprehensive systems of care that include psychosocial services and logistical support along with medical treatment,” said Elizabeth M. Duke, Ph.D., administrator of HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

HRSA this month celebrates 20 years as an HHS agency.  HRSA programs provide the foundation of the nation’s health care safety net by expanding access to health care for low-income Americans, people living with HIV/AIDS, mothers and their young children, and residents of rural areas.  Other HRSA programs improve the training and diversity of the health professions and encourage greater organ and tissue donation.

HRSA’s HIV/AIDS Bureau administers CARE Act programs.  Since FY 1991, Congress has appropriated $11.6 billion in CARE Act funding to help an estimated 533,000 individuals access life-sustaining care and services each year.  A list of this year’s new Title IV grant recipients is attached below.
