Region I

The Office of the Regional Director is collaborating with the Harvard Medical School Family Van and Partners Health Care System to provide comprehensive health screenings through its traveling Family Van.  Screening events will be held in the following Boston locations:

Region II

The Jose S. Belaval Community Health Center will offer respiratory health education on air contamination, asthma and use of inhalers.  Participants will also receive nutrition services, blood pressure checks, and diabetes screening.

C. Virginia Fields, Manhattan Borough President will proclaim September 21st Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day at North General Hospital as they celebrate from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon.  Participants will receive free gifts, health information, health care screenings, consultations with physicians and referrals for appointments to medical clinics, subspecialty clinics, dental, ophthalmology, and gynecology. Health information and education will be given on such topics as HIV/AIDS, nutrition, cancer prevention, Medical House Call Program, asthma, hypertension, diabetes, drug abuse and alcoholism, clinics at North General Hospital.  Health care screenings will include: blood pressure, blood sugar, weight and basic metabolic index, HIV/AIDS counseling and testing, breathing tests such as spirometry and pulse oximetry (oxygen test) will be offered to persons who are smokers or have other respiratory conditions.  Peak flow readings will be done for persons with asthma.  Peak flow meters will be given to asthmatics. WWRL 1600 Radio station will broadcast the event all next week.  On the day of the event, the van will be in front of the hospital.  Partners include HHS, Diagnostic and Treatment Center, Community Outreach, HIV/AIDS, ATC, Respiratory Therapy, Nutrition and the Medical House Call Program, Ralph Lauren Cancer Center, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and Center Care HMO.

Save Latin America's Doctor Day event was held on September 19th.  They provided a range of health and social services to help participants develop healthier lifestyle habits and obtain access to health care.  Educational topics included health care, insurance, nutrition, physical activity, and smoking cessation.

Region III

 

Baltimore, Maryland

For the third consecutive year, Times Community Services, Inc. and the Baltimore Times Foundation will lead a large community event at War Memorial Plaza on September 21st. CMS Administrator McClellan, Assistant Secretary for Aging Josefina Carbonell, and other health officials will be on-site promoting good health.  More than 1,000 people are expected to attend and take advantage of health screenings.  Health providers will also be on-site to answer health-related problems or questions.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-

On September 21st, the University of Pittsburgh Center for Minority Health will lead teams of physicians, nurses, health educators and other public health professionals into selected barber shops and beauty salons to provide life saving information and health screenings and to help build trust with the community. Clarence Carter, HHS Director of Community Services at the Administration of Children and Families will be onsite with the salons and shops.  Together, they will emphasize the importance of regular health screenings and focus on people who tend to have the least access to health care.  This third annual event, Take a Health Professional to the People Day, puts a fun twist on Doctor Day. Partner barber shops and salons include Natural Choice, Easleys Unisex Salon, Aiken's Quality Cut, Bat's Barbershop, Wades Barber Shop, Willie Tee's Barber Shop, Sittin' Pretty Salon & Day Spa, and Mark Anthony Beauty Salon.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The Women’s Institute for Family Health will host its Second Annual Health Symposium in collaboration with Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day on September 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Dilworth Plaza at City Hall.  The event will feature health exhibits, informational tables, screenings, entertainment and guest speakers.

Washington, DC

On September 21st, the Chinatown Service Center of the Chinese Community Church will encourage community members to access healthcare and help their loved ones do the same.  The Center will host a health fair offering a variety of health screenings.

Milford, Delaware

Delaware’s Division of Public Health, Office of Minority Health (OMH) inspired Benjamin Banneker, Principal Jean Wylie, and School Nurse Sue Smith to teach third graders about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.  Lowell Scott, MD, a Milford pediatrician and member of the local chapter of the National Medical Association made two presentations on why people of any age should eat the healthy foods, get plenty of exercise and see a doctor regularly for check-ups or other health screenings.  Students wrote letters to parents, caregivers or other adults to remind them that good health begins with seeing a health care provider on September 21st to commemorate Take a Loved One To The Doctor Day.

 

Virginia Beach, Virginia

The Making a Difference Foundation will help its community by organizing a Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day event on September 21st.  The event will focus primarily on the importance of accessing healthcare, screenings, and prevention.  A variety of screenings and educational information will be provided to the participants.

The West Virginia Primary Care Association (WVPCA) will be supporting four community health centers in an effort to support their Doctor Day activities.

Roane Family Health Care (Roane County, Spencer)

Roane Family Health Care will utilize the grant funds to supplement its transportation initiative in conjunction with Roane County Senior Services.  They plan to hire additional driver(s) that will use Senior Services vans to transport elderly residents to the health center on the 21st.

 

Jackson County Community Health Center (Jackson County, Ravenswood)

The Jackson County Community Health Center is planning to hold a free cholesterol screening, blood pressure, and body mass index check for the residents of Jackson County.  Area residents will be encouraged to make an appointment on September 20 or 21 for the free services.  They will give out helpful tools such as “Know Your Numbers” information and wallet cards.  Additional information regarding high blood pressure, healthy eating, and exercise will also be available in our lobby for patrons to read and take with them.  All faith-based organizations in the county will be contacted about the free screenings, as well as an announcement in the local papers. 

 

Tug River Health Association (McDowell County, Gary)

Tug River Health Association plans to participate in community fairs being held throughout the month of September.  They plan to promote Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day by distributing pledge cards at select events prior to the 21st, both at the clinic and in the community.  They will place promotional material in local schools, grocery stores, and in paychecks of area businesses.  They are also running PSAs and articles in local papers.  In addition, they will be doing free blood pressure screenings.

 

Cabin Creek Health Center (Kanawha County, Sharon/Dawes)

Cabin Creek Health Center will promote Doctor Day by distributing promotional t-shirts and other material into the community.

 

 

Region IV

 

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston will commemorate Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day with a free community health event featuring diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, HIV, dental and spinal screenings and a bone marrow drive.  The City of Charleston Recreation Center will open the activities with a Walk for Love, from 10-11 AM. Screenings will be held at Hampton Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 21.  The event is sponsored by SC COBRE for Oral Health, Project Sugar and the City of Charleston Recreation Department.  Partners include 100 Black Men of Charleston, NAACP, the Franklin Health Center, Jerusalem Baptist Church, Charleston Neck and Back, and several other community based organizations.  100.9 FM and other media are expected to attend.

Miami, Florida

Tom Joyner will host a live broadcast from a health event at the Joseph Caleb Community Center from 6:00-10:00AM.  Tommy G. Thompson, Secretary of Health and Human Services will do a live interview with Joyner. Garth Graham, HHS Acting Director of Minority Health will be onsite promoting health and disease prevention. Throughout the health fair, participants will receive blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, and HIV/AIDS testing.  Partners include WHQT Hot 105 FM, the Economic Opportunity Family Health Center, and Burger King.  Burger King will offer free health care coupons.  Last year, approximately 700 participants attended the event.

Region V

 

Cincinnati, Ohio

The Center for Closing the Health Gap in Greater Cincinnati hosted a health fair and press conference at the Lincoln Heights Health Care Connection, a new federally funded community health center last Tuesday, September 14th.  Participants received blood pressure checks, dental screenings, refreshments, and a tour of the new facility.  Dwight Tillery, former mayor and CEO of the Center, lead this effort for the second year.  HHS Deputy Secretary Claude Allen, community leaders and residents attended this event, kicking off health activities during the month across the city.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee will kick-off Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day on September 21st at 10 AM at the Hillside Family Resource Center.  The event will begin with a press conference and continue with an array of health screenings including dental, BMI, cholesterol, prostate, dental, and vision blood pressure checks. Last year, more than 700 people were screened.  HHS Deputy Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu, City of Milwaukee Health Commissioner Bevin Bake, and Milwaukee Housing Authority Officials will lead the presentation on Doctor Day.  Public housing residents and children from the Boys and Girls Club and Head Start are expected to participate.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The Clinton Rose Senior Center will be commemorating Doctor Day for its third year in conjunction with Covenant Health Care Systems and the Milwaukee Center for the Blind.  Together, they will help an estimated 200 African American seniors monitor their health by offering free vision, blood pressure, memory, diabetes, kidney, bone density, and pulmonary health screenings.  Partners include the Milwaukee Department on Aging, the Alzheimer's Association, Westside Health Care Association, the Milwaukee Health Department, and the Milwaukee Housing Authority.

Region VI

 

Dallas, Texas

On September 21st, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Clinic will host a big Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day event featuring more than 17 types of health screenings, health education, information on food Stamps, Medicaid enrollment, entertainment, raffles, children’s activities and prizes. 94.5 KSoul will broadcast live from the event and there will be a special appearance by Tony B. Dancers from the Dallas Mavericks will promote physical activity by leading participants in a dance/ exercise routine. Participants will also be able to take part in voter registration and blood donation. The event will run from 8:00 AM-6:30PM.  Mayor Miller and local council members will present a Doctor Day proclamation during a press conference at 10:00 AM. Josephine Robinson, HHS Principal Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Health will also help kick-off the event. More than 30 vendors and partners are collaborating to make this event a success.

Houston, Texas

The Phi Beta Lambda Houston Loves You Committee is collaborating with health centers throughout Houston to host health fairs on September 21st from 9:00AM-7:00PM.  More than 30 physicians and health providers will help participants start their paths to healthy living. Participants will receive information about child health insurance, immunization and Nutrition, and elderly and adult home health care.  Screenings and appointments will be available for blood pressure, dental, glucose, mammography, ultrasound, vision, HIV/STD, and women, children and men’s wellness.  97.9 FM, The Box, will help to promote the events.

Region VII

 

Kansas City, Kansas

HHS Deputy Secretary Claude Allen, HHS Regional Director Fred Schuster, Sybil of the Tom Joyner Morning Show, and baseball hall of fame Buck O'Neil, will help promote prevention and good health at the Negro League Baseball Museum. The event will begin at 8:00 AM and continue until 1:30PM. The Tom Joyner Morning Show and MAJIC 107.3 will broadcast live from the event. Proclamations from the governor’s office and Mayor Marinovich declaring September 21st Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day will be presented. The U.S Postal Service will also launch a new postage stamp featuring sickle cell anemia awareness. Participants will be able to learn about their health status with an array of free health screenings that will be offered. More than 20 partners and sponsors are collaborating in this effort. The Kansas City Free Health Clinic will have a mobile health van on site offering free rapid HIV testing and will have open appointments at their clinic throughout the day. Yellow Cab will provide taxi service to the event.  El Centro will also provide transportation services as well as free screenings at their Academy for Children following the event from 3:00 -7:00PM. A Minority Health Grant Award will be presented to El Centro. Swope Health Services will provide health screenings at Swope Health Central and Swope Health Quindaro.

Region VIII

 

Utah

On Dr. Day, the Utah Multicultural Health Network is sponsoring an educational and outreach event at the Northwest Middle School in the Salt Lake School District.  The event will feature free seminars on diabetes in Spanish, health screenings, and other fun activities.  The Utah Department of Health will help families apply for Medicaid. Leading into the event, the HHS Regional office is planning a series of health promotion activities including PSAs on Spanish-language radio and Univision.  Univision will also air information about Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day and Mundo Hispano will run an article about the event.  The Utah Department of Health Immunization Program is scheduled to air a PSA on the ABC Good Things Utah program and include the event in their communications the week prior to and after.

Region IX

 

Porterville, California

On September 26, the HHS Regional office will continue the celebration of Doctor Day with a large event to help improve the health of migrant farm workers.  An estimated 700-1500 people are expected to participate in the event. Diabetes testing and blood pressure screenings will be offered. Regional Director Calise Muñoz and Representative Devin Nunes will do radio via live remote.  The event will also be promoted on Radio Bilingue.  To sustain the education efforts, educational tips to help educate farm workers about diabetes, obesity, occupational health, and oral health will be broadcasted via PSAs, interactive talk shows, news features, and mini dramas.

Casa Grande, Arizona
Community leaders will participate in a health roundtable at the Sun Life Family Health Center on Tuesday, September 21, at 1 PM.  Members of the Casa Grande community will discuss the importance of disease prevention and regular check-ups. There will also be a discussion about federal initiatives to reduce diabetes and obesity and future Medicare changes.  Representative Rick Renzi's office is helping to distribute Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day pledge cards throughout the community.

On September 22nd, Carolyn Downs Family Medical Center will host a Doctor Day event that will offer mammograms, pelvic exams, pap smears, blood pressure checks, and glucose screenings to African American women and other participants. The event will be open to all from 2-7PM. Community partners include Public Health- Seattle & King County (PHSKC), the Center for Multicultural Health, Country Doctor Community Health Centers, YWCA Women’s Health Outreach, Qualis Health, Comprehensive Breast Center/ Swedish-Providence Campus, Washington Breast and Cervical Health Program, and the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Washington

SeaMar Community Health Centers celebrated Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day with a large health festival, Fiesta Patrias, from 12-7 PM on Saturday, September 18th.   The event combined the health messages of Closing the Health Gap and commemorates the pride, culture, and history of Mexican Independence.  It included health screenings, a parade, music, and activities for children.  An estimated 3,000 people, mostly Latino, were expected to attend.
