Geospatial DataMost data and management applications in forest ecosystems have a spatial component. Far beyond simply being maps, data layers (or coverages) within geographic information systems (GIS) provide the data and geographic information needed for both short-term and long-term management and planning. This section contains several major collections of geospatial data for the Pacific Northwest.
Over 180 different GIS data layers (or themes) were compiled or created in support of the ICBEMP Assessment. The data compiled includes spatial layers, and tabular data that may link to spatial layers. Datasets are grouped into the following themes: aquatic, atmospheric, cultural, demographic, disturbance, hydrology, minerals/geology, physiographic, political, species, and vegetation.
The Washington state spatial data clearinghouse is a node on the National Spatial Data Infrastructure. You can search the node for available geospatial data for Washington. WaDNR distributes natural heritage spatial data representing the location and status information for rare plant species, high-quality terrestrial ecosystems, and high-quality wetland ecosystems within the state of Washington. They are currently working on the Washington Geospatial Framework which will include digital orthoimagery, elevation, transportation, hydrography, governmental units and cadastral data. A statewide land cover data set based on 1991 Landsat TM imagery, defining 13 ecoregions and delineating 31 vegetation zones. Contains a wide variety of geospatial data themes for Oregon. ODF distributes GIS data in the following themes: fire protection, forest practices, and state forest lands.
The Olympic Natural Resources Center (ONRC) Clearinghouse is a metadata archive of Olympic Peninsula geospatial and biological data. It brings together natural and cultural resource information reflecting the region's diverse marine and terrestrial ecology, land ownership, and land use. This gateway lets you order and download elevation data, satellite imagery, aerial photography, digital line graphs, digital raster graphics and other geospatial data from the USGS.
