American National Standards Institute Introduces Standards Developers to Environmentally Preferable Purchasing

ANSI in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has developed a presentation to introduce all ANSI-Accredited Standards Developers to the topic of Environmental Preferable Purchasing (EPP). EPP is a federal-wide program that encourages and assists executive agencies in the purchasing of environmentally preferable products and services. These are "products or services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose." The 38-slide presentation (also containing speaker notes) provides information on how voluntary consensus standards can incorporate EPP provisions to protect the environment, and reflect life-cycle concerns. Topics covered in the presentation include:

  • The definition and background of Environmentally Preferable Purchasing
  • A review of standardization and the environment as a cooperative effort of the public and private sectors
  • A review of incentives for incorporating life-cycle and environmental elements in voluntary standards
  • A proposed methodology for incorporating such elements in standards-setting discussions
  • Supporting documentation, including case studies, information resources (databases, guidelines, etc.) and pilot programs
