star focus: star and the data grid

As the amount of data recorded by the STAR Experiment accumulates, the data storage and data processing needs grow as well. STAR is an active participant in the Particle Physics Data Grid, a project to manage and distribute data and data analysis tasks across a large network of computing facilities around the country.

With the retraction of the west poletip today, the installation of the STAR endcap electromagnetic calorimeter (EEMC) is complete. Although the full detector was in place for the last run, the completion of readout electronics had to wait until this summer's shutdown. Initial testing shows no major problems, and commissioning will begin when the platform is fully powered after roll in.
