Health Information for Travelers in Africa Malaria Risks. Malaria is a serious disease transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. It can be found in nearly every country in Africa. See the regional information below. Recent Outbreaks Angola.There has been a recent outbreak of Poliomyelitis in Angola. Travelers to Angola are advised to review their polio immunization history and ensure that they have received a complete primary series of three doses before initiating travel. Recent Outbreaks Cape Verde. From August October 2000, 33 cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), including seven (21%) deaths, were reported in Cape Verde, an archipelago of 10 islands west of Senegal and Mauritania. Preliminary laboratory results identified wild type 1 poliovirus among eight cases. Recent Outbreaks - Ethiopia. On August 16, 2000, the CDC received unofficial notice of an outbreak of meningococcal disease in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. A total of 648 cases have been reported (35% of which have laboratory confirmation) with a case-fatality ratio in the range of 3%. Recent Outbreaks Uganda. An outbreak of viral hemorrhagic fever is occurring in Gulu District in northern Uganda. Laboratory tests conducted at the National Institute of Virology in South Africa indicate that the Ebola virus is the cause of the outbreak. Travel Warnings. The State Department issues travel warnings to specific countries based on all relevant information, in order to recommend that Americans avoid travel to a certain country.
