The Windsock

The Public Affairs Office, in conjunction with Ellis Publishing of Havelock, N.C., produces the air station's weekly newspaper, The Windsock, published each Thursday and distributed on station and in the surrounding community.

Location  
Cherry Point is located midway between New Bern and Morehead City, N.C. The main gate is off North Carolina Highway 101, which connects with U.S. Highway 70 adjacent to the city of Havelock. On a large-scale map, Cherry Point can be pinpointed about 90 miles west-southwest of Cape Hatteras on the Neuse River in Craven County.  

The area enjoys a temperate climate with relatively mild winters, hot and humid summers, and precipitation throughout the year. The average annual rainfall is over 50 inches, and snow, although rare, does visit the area occasionally. Topography is relatively flat, approximately 27 feet above sea level.

Means of commercial transportation into the area are:

By Air:
The closest commercial airport to Cherry Point is Craven County Regional Airport, in New Bern. Approximately 20 miles from the air station, it is serviced by USAir/Henson Regional Airlines, with a major connecting point at Charlotte, N.C., which has connections to all major airports. For reservations, call 1-800-428-4322. Taxicab service and car rentals are available.

The Albert J. Ellis Airport in Onslow County (near Jacksonville) is approximately 65 miles from Cherry Point. It is served by USAir/Henson Regional Airlines with five flights daily connecting to Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Charlotte, N.C.; and Baltimore, Md. Limousine and taxi services are available, as well as car rentals.

Kinston Airport is serviced by USAir, which also offers daily flights.  Kinston Airport has connections with nationwide service through either Charlotte or the Baltimore-Washington International Airport. For reservations call 1-800-428-4322.
