National Bone Health Campaign
About the Campaign
Powerful Bones. Powerful Girls.TM

Powerful Bones Screen CaptureThe National Bone Health Campaign (NBHC) promotes optimal bone health among girls aged 9–12 years in an effort to reduce their risk of osteoporosis later in life. The campaign's purpose is to encourage girls to establish lifelong healthy habits, focusing on increased calcium consumption and weight-bearing physical activity to build and maintain strong bones. Parents and other adults close to girls play an important role by encouraging girls to take action.

To reach girls where they live and play, the campaign includes print materials for girls, developed in collaboration with government and nonprofit organizations, including state health departments and the Girl Scouts of the USA, and Girls Inc.; and print and radio advertisements for girls and parents.

Each year, more young people are going online for information and entertainment. In response, the National Bone Health Campaign will be there with a fun, interactive way to show girls why calcium and weight-bearing physical activities can build strong bones and how these fit easily into a girl's busy lifestyle.

Girls who eat more foods with calcium and participate in weight-bearing physical activities develop stronger, denser bones, a concept associated in the minds of girls with being powerful inside and out. Campaign messages and materials feature a cartoon spokesperson, Carla, who with her friends engage in a variety of fun and interactive adventures.
