Spring Thaw 2005

Make Safety Personal
Spring Thaw 2005

MSHA, in cooperation with various industry leaders, is co-sponsoring Spring Thaw 2005. The M/NM industry will host more than 49 cooperative mine safety and health workshops around the nation to increase awareness of mining hazards. Safety professionals from mining companies as well as MSHA personnel will share information and experiences in dealing with mining hazards. This year's workshops will focus their presentation around this year's theme of " Make Safety Personal" . The seminars will coincide with winter's end, when many intermittently operated mining operations begin producing again, often with new employees who are new to the mining environment. Statistics show that accidents tend to increase during April and May. There is no charge to attend the seminars. If you would like to speak or host please use this link!

The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE)
North American Occupational Safety and Health Week
May 1 – 7, 2005

The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) announced it's annual North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (NAOSH) will be held May 1 – 7, 2005. Founded in 1911, ASSE and its 30,000 occupational safety, health and environmental professional members urge everyone to participate in NAOSH 05, a week aimed at increasing the focus of employers, employees, and the general public on preventing injury and illness in the workplace.

NAOSH 05 will focus on remembering the workplace tragedies that occurred and identifying, reviewing and communicating solutions aimed at preventing such accidents from occurring again.

At last year's NAOSH 04 event at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago federal officials unveiled a new "Personal Dust Monitor (PDM)," a device aimed at providing miners with the ability to immediately gauge their exposure to harmful coal dust and reduce their chance of injury. In the past, the procedure for measuring mine coal dust involved collecting it on a filter, a piece of paper and mailing it to a laboratory to be analyzed. Weeks pass before the results are in, often too late to take any immediate corrective action. The PDM along with many other new activities and products help prevent workplace injury and illness.

For more information and NAOSH tools visit http://www.asse.org/naosh05 or contact ASSE at 847-699-2929 or customerservice@asse.org.
