Public Health Assessment Guidance Manual

Table of Contents

Note To Users:

The Public Health Assessment Guidance Manual is a guidance document for health assessors both at ATSDR and in the states. It outlines the health assessment process and provides information to the health assessors on different technical and scientific aspects of performing public health assessments. Please see the Foreword for more information about the public health assessment process or visit the ATSDR homepage for information on ATSDR policies and activities.

ATSDR's Public Health Assessment Guidance Manual is best viewed with a tables-capable browser. Certain advanced table features, such as table nesting, shading of individual cells, and nesting lists within table cells, have been used in some cases. Recent versions of both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support the advanced features of tables. They are available at www.netscape.com and www.microsoft.com, respectively.

This document is organized into 9 chapters, and 13 appendices. Each chapter is a separate file. In several cases, the different figures, tables, examples, and exhibits of each chapter are also in separate files. There are hyperlinks to those files from the respective chapters. The combined size of the HTML version of this document is about 2000 KB. Keeping the different chapters and their entities in separate files (size of the file at the end of any hyperlink is very small) gives the user greater control over what material is viewed, thereby making it easier and quicker to read the whole document.

Some of the appendices are in pdf format. The Adobe™ Acrobat™ Reader is required to view, navigate and print from pdf files (The Adobe™ Acrobat™ Reader can be downloaded free of cost from the Adobe homepage at www.adobe.com). The Acrobat Reader can be installed as a plug-in in versions of Netscape Navigator 2.0 and Internet Explorer 3.0 or newer. More information about installing and using the Acrobat Reader can be found at the Adobe homepage.

Every effort has been made to keep the size of the individual files reasonable. However, you will not be able to print out the entire document at once. One way around this is by saving each file to a word processor, and then combining the files into one long document for printing.
