Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry

Christopher Thomas De Rosa, Ph.D.
 

Dr. Christopher T. De Rosa has been the Director, Division of Toxicology, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) since April 1992. Prior to his selection as Division Director, Dr. De Rosa was the Deputy Associate Administrator for Science, also at ATSDR. Before coming to ATSDR, Dr. De Rosa worked with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1984 to 1991. While with the EPA, Dr. De Rosa served in a number of capacities, including the Acting Director of Environmental Criteria and Assessment Office (ECAO), Group Leader, and Acting Branch Chief and Branch Chief of the Chemical Mixtures Assessment Branch of ECAO.

After receiving his MS in ecology and Ph.D. in biology from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, in 1976, Dr. De Rosa served as an Instructor and then Assistant Professor of biology at the University of Virginia until 1980, when he joined ECAO due to a growing interest in the applied aspects of ecologic and environmental health research. From 1982 to 1984 he returned to teaching and research as Assistant Professor of botany and zoology at the University of Maine. He has been the recipient of the U.S.E.P.A Bronze Medal four times and has served as a consultant to EPA, the State Department, NASA, DoE and DoD, NATO, PAHO, WHO and a range of foreign governments. He is author/co-author of over 180 peer-reviewed publications. His current professional interests are centered on the interface of environmental health science and science policy, with emphasis on risk analysis as a synthetic construct for the risk assessment and disease prevention paradigms.

Dr. De Rosa is a member of the Society for Risk Analysis, the Ecological Society of America, the American College of Toxicology, the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Research Society of North America. He is an elected fellow of the Collegium Ramazzini and a credentialed member of the Senior Biomedical Research Service (ATSDR/CDC).
