Standard Populations (Millions) for Age-Adjustment
Standard populations, often referred to as standard millions, are the age distributions used as weights
to create age-adjusted statistics. Files containing standard population
data for use in statistical software are available below.
These contain the same data
distributed with the SEER*Stat software.
These files and the standard population data distributed with SEER*Stat
were modified on April 30, 2003 (see Corrections
to the Standard Population Data). SEER also provides US Population Data which
can be used for analyses with SEER*Stat or other software.
Standard Population Files
The standard population data files contain the following data:
- U.S. Standards (1940, 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980,
1990, 2000)
- World Standard
- Canadian Standards (1991, 1996)
- European Standard
Two standard population data files are provided as self-extracting zip files. One file contains
age distributions for 19 age groups: < 1, 1-4, 5-9, 10-14, ..., 80-84, 85+. The other contains age
distributions for 18 age groups: 0-4, 5-9, 10-14, ..., 80-84, 85+.
- Download the 19 age group standard population file (stdpop19.exe).
- Download the 18 age group standard population file (stdpop18.exe).

Notes:
- In the 18 age group file:
- Column positions 29-37 are not applicable and are zero-filled.
- Column positions 38-46 contain standard populations for the 0-4 year old age group.
- When documenting your work, please specify both the standard population and the number of age groups. For example, the terms "2000 U.S. (18 age groups) standard" and "2000 U.S. (19 age groups) standard" are used within SEER*Stat.
- These data files contain extra columns which are not described above and can be ignored.
