List of MPAs

The MPA list is called for by Section 4(d) of Executive Order 13158. The marine managed areas inventory will be used to form a pool from which sites may later be considered for placement on the list of MPAs, as well as for scientific analyses.

The MMA inventory and the MPA list are two separate actions. The inventory is being completed first, and the list will be determined in the future after an administrative process for listing has been established. Data in the inventory will be used to assess whether or not specific sites on the inventory meet the definitions and criteria to be placed on the list of MPAs.

Some inventory sites may not meet all of the criteria necessary for placement on the list of MPAs, but these sites will be maintained as part of the MMA inventory.

Please check here occasionally for the latest information on the List of Marine Protected Areas and the process for establishing the List.
