Overview

The United States Coast Guard is a military, multimission, maritime service and one of the nation’s five Armed Services. Its mission is to protect the public, the environment, and U.S. economic interests – in the nation’s ports and waterways, along the coast, on international waters, or in any maritime region as required to support national security. 

Today, the Coast Guard will: 

  • Save 11 lives 
  • Assist 192 people in distress An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City flies over a 41-foot utility boat from Reserve Training Center Yorktown during a search and rescue demonstration for Coast Guard Missions Day.
  • Protect $2.8 million in property 
  • Interdict 14 illegal migrants at sea 
  • Conduct 106 search and rescue cases 
  • Seize $10.7 million  worth of illegal drugs 
  • Respond to 20 oil and hazardous chemical spills 
  • Board and inspect 138 vessels
