The U.S. Embassy
recognizes the impact of the current economic crisis on
individuals and social services in Uruguay. To help alleviate
suffering, the Embassy works with Uruguayan authorities
to increase humanitarian assistance programs, especially
in the field of medicine.
Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein took particular
note of the need for medical supplies during visits to public
hospitals throughout Uruguay. In response, he launched a
campaign to bring donated supplies to the Uruguayan people.
The Embassy’s humanitarian assistance program started
in 2002 with donated medical supplies and education programs
and has increased in 2003. Donations of pharmaceuticals,
medical supplies, medical services, school supplies and
school equipment are scheduled throughout the year.
United States government agencies and private institutions
support the efforts of the Embassy and the Uruguayan government,
thanks to their high level of confidence in and appreciation
for the institutions and people of Uruguay.
