Overview: What NCCAM Funds

What is NCCAM?

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is one of the 27 institutes and centers that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH). View NCCAM's mission.

What does NCCAM Fund?

NCCAM funds:
  • Scientific research on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). NCCAM's Research Priorities and Strategic Plan explain its related goals.
  • Training of CAM researchers. Find out about Training opportunities that NCCAM offers.

NCCAM does not support the development or delivery of clinical practice other than as a component of funded research.

To learn more about CAM, see What is CAM?.

How does NCCAM make awards?

Funding is only awarded in response to grant applications sent to NIH. Researchers may refer to Types of Grants and Active Funding Announcements to find grant opportunities that may be appropriate for them.

In fiscal year 2003, NCCAM funded 14% of applications received. The Funding Strategy explains how NCCAM chooses which applications to fund.

The funding process is competitive. Scientific review groups at the NIH Center for Scientific Review assess the scientific merit of all applications. Only those applications with the best ratings are considered for funding.
