About GSA
Heartland (6) Bannister Federal Complex

The 10-building Bannister Federal Complex, located at 1500 E. Bannister Road, Kansas City, Missouri, was originally home to Kansas City’s premiere wooden racetrack.  Numerous early racecar derbies were held at the site.

The site gained a new importance during World War II.  Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Senator Harry S. Truman broke ground on the complex on July 4, 1942.  Construction began on the large facility and became home to Pratt and Whitney, manufacturer of airplane engines.

Following the victory in Japan, the plant was closed and sat vacant until 1949, when Westinghouse leased space to build jet engines, many of which were used in the Korean conflict.  Today, the complex serves as a home for many federal agencies.

The Kansas City South Field Office, located in Building 50 of the Bannister Federal Complex, invites its tenants to explore the variety of amenities the property has to offer, listed below.

The most recent Tenant Satisfaction Survey indicates that 90 percent of Bannister tenants are satisfied with the Kansas City South Field Office and the Bannister Federal Complex.  The field office would like to thank each tenant that completed the survey. The field office utilizes the information obtained from the survey to make changes that will lead to greater customer satisfaction.

Construction Projects

The Kansas City South Field Office is excited to be involved in the construction of the new skylight.  The skylight is located at the entrance to the Plaza Level Auditorium, Building 1.  The skylight measures 40’x 80’, and extends above the existing Bannister Complex roof.  A corridor will be constructed in order for all tenants to enjoy the natural light that will compliment the existing warehouse space.  The field office would like to thank the tenants for their patience with this project, which is scheduled for completion in the spring.  Photos of the construction are available in the library section of this page.
