GSA is a federal procurement and property management agency created to improve government efficiency and help federal agencies better serve the public. GSA's 13,000 associates provide services and solutions for the workplace operations of over one million federal workers located in government-owned and leased buildings in more than 2,000 U.S. communities and overseas.

GSA's Northeast and Caribbean Region provides products and services in the states of New York and New Jersey, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Europe. More than 750 GSA associates work in the Region. They support other federal workers, located in approximately 450 government-owned and leased regional buildings, by acquiring:

  • office space
  • equipment
  • supplies
  • telecommunications and
  • information technology

A Welcome from Our Regional Administrator

Welcome to our regional website. While GSA's Northeast and Caribbean Region is rich with diversity and vast in its reach, one thing unifies everything we do: A commitment to delivering the best possible service to our federal agency customers at best value to the American taxpayers.

Highlighted below are several important projects and initiatives to give you a sense of what our region is accomplishing:

Meeting and exceeding the needs of our federal customers…

* Our Global Supply and Schedules program provides a vehicle for our federal customers to order the necessary goods and services that support their missions. Our business volume was nearly $994 million in 2003. The region also administers over 3,500 schedule contracts with annual reported sales of approximately $4.6 billion dollars.

* We are enabling convenience buying for federal and military buyers by making it possible for government purchase cardholders to shop for thousands of discounted contract items both online and at Office Depot locations nationwide.

* Our construction of two major federal courthouses, one in downtown Brooklyn and the other in downtown Buffalo, will meet crucial space and operational requirements of the federal courts while enhancing both communities and contributing to local economic strength by creating jobs and spurring growth.

Enhancing and supporting national security interests…

* Our region is supporting our nation’s activities in the Middle East in several areas. Our Global Supply system has provided almost $50 million in goods and services while our fleet program, which generated $72.4 million last year, has assisted with critical transportation assistance at Fort Dix, New Jersey. We have also been instrumental in updating and maintaining the legacy communications system used to communicate to troops deployed in the field. These systems collectively serve as the "backbone" for all Army communications and provide essential secure voice, data and satellite communications.

* We have responsibility for 16 check points along the US-Canadian border. Partnering with the Department of Homeland Security, GSA is enhancing and expanding critical border crossings to improve traffic flow and increase security.

* Our region has taken the lead in developing new federal employee identification and security clearance cards. Our groundbreaking work on "SmartCards" will become a national standard to identify employees and emergency responders, using the latest technology to control access to federal facilities.

* We provided extensive relocation support of a major US Army Material Command headquarters, a provider of supplies and services for troops. Since their previous location was considered vulnerable to terrorist attack, relocating was a priority. Two GSA services teamed to respond expeditiously to the Army’s requirements and performed IT acquisition and project management.

Preserving our heritage… Supporting our local communities…

* Meeting a President Bush priority, our region was instrumental in transferring Governors Island from federal ownership to New York. Located in New York harbor, Governors Island contains a historic district with two forts. The city and state plan to protect the historic district and develop the island for educational use.

* Our region is responsible for managing restoration, rehabilitation and ongoing preservation of several historic buildings including the Jose V. Toledo U.S. Post Office and Courthouse in Old San Juan, the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House in Manhattan, and the old General Post Office in Brooklyn.

* We are bringing the historic and culturally significant New York African Burial Ground Project to a successful completion after years of controversy. By applying renewed leadership and priority, today's GSA has achieved significant advancement on the project and, in October 2003, the remains and artifacts of enslaved and free Africans unearthed at the site were returned following a week-long, multi-city celebration. We encourage you to visit the region’s informative website about the African Burial Ground at: www.africanburialground.com.

* We are involved in the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site. The federal government lost an entire building as a result of the terrorist attacks, and we are actively engaged in supporting President Bush, Governor Pataki, and NYC Mayor Bloomberg as progress advances at the site.

Being socially and environmentally responsible…

* Our region is a national leader in implementing "green" initiatives. Three of our federal buildings are powered by wind power and, through GSA contracts, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are also powered by renewable energy. Our region has an aggressive recycling program, we are constructing highly energy efficient buildings, and we are leasing over 2,700 alternative fuel vehicles.

* We support socio-economic goals by serving as one of the largest distributors of items and a major contractor of services prescribed by the Javits-Wagner O’Day Act, expanding employment opportunities for people who are blind or severely disabled.

We encourage you to visit here often to learn more about who we are and what we do. As public servants, it is our obligation to remain accessible, answerable, and responsive to you. This website is one way we are meeting President Bush's challenge to bring citizens closer to their government.
