Heartland (6) Charles Evans Whittaker Courthouse
Charles Evans Whittaker Courthouse

Located in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, the 615,000 square foot Charles Evans Whittaker United States Courthouse includes 16 courtrooms, the Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge’s Chambers, U.S. Attorney’s office, U.S. Marshall’s offices, court-related agencies, extensive multimedia conferencing facilities, a cafeteria and kitchen and enclosed secured parking for 100 vehicles.

The courthouse corridors utilized diverse materials such as granite, limestone, glass, and terrazzo. Main public areas feature limestone wainscoting. Brass elevator doors and custom lighting adorn the elevator waiting areas. The rotunda lobby features granite columns, terrazzo floors and a collection of five 25-foot tall sculptures.

Its exterior has 2,400 pieces of pre-cast concrete, including radius style architectural panels and an extensive array of column covers. Special rolled steel forms had to be purchased for the project to ensure the absolute smoothness required of the panels.

"PAX" and "LEX," engraved on each side of the main entrance, are Latin for "Peace" and "Law." The words symbolize the peaceful resolution of legal disputes.

The Kansas City North Field Office is responsible for the daily operations of the Charles Evans Whittaker United States Courthouse.
