The Office of Security and Safety Performance Assurance manages the Department’s major staff organizations responsible for security policy development and national-level independent oversight. The office was created to provide higher visibility and greater focus to the Department’s security-related programs and to achieve increased safeguards and security program effectiveness and efficiency by better integrating the individual efforts and results of the Department’s policy and oversight organizations. The Office of Security (policy function) and the Office of Independent Oversight and Performance Assurance (oversight function) were incorporated into the Office of Security and Safety Performance Assurance intact, each retaining its individual missions, functions, structure, and relationship to the other. The Office of Security develops and interprets safeguards and security policy, provides policy guidance, establishes security-related training standards, provides related professional training, and directs the development, evaluation, and dissemination of security-related technologies. The Office of Independent Oversight and Performance Assurance evaluates the effectiveness of policies and Department-wide policy implementation in the areas of safeguards and security, cyber security, emergency management, and environment, safety and health.
