Chronic Beryllium Disease

The Office of Environment Safety and Health (EH or ES&H) maintains a program designed to assess the health impacts of DOE operations on employees exposed to airborne concentrations of beryllium.  DOE facilitates the initiation of an integrated interagency CBD research agenda leading to improved diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of this disease. DOE departmental elements responsible for protection and control measures for current workers, compensation for individuals who have developed CBD, and CBD research, work closely with other agencies conducting related activities.

In addition, the Office of Hearings and Appeals (OHA) reviews disputes under the DOE’s Chronic Beryllium Disease Protection Program.  A worker may request resolution of disputes concerning compliance with the applicable protection plan, medical monitoring, and job transfers.
