Environment, Safety, and Health

The Office of Environment, Safety, and Health (EH) advises the Secretary of Energy on the status of the health and safety of DOE workers, the public, and the environment near DOE facilities.  The mission of EH is to provide corporate infrastructure and technical resources that enable work to be performed in a safe, healthful, and environmentally sound manner.

By statute, DOE assumes direct regulatory authority for safety and health of DOE workers, public, and the environment near DOE sites.  EH plays a critical role by developing meaningful programs and policies, and conducting independent reviews of environment, safety, and health performance.  EH further supports the DOE mission by providing technical services, resources and information sharing capabilities.

EH serves as DOE’s advocate to assure the Department’s interests are reflected in the formulation of environmental regulations and standards; develops environment, safety, and health directives and policies; enforces the Price-Anderson Act; and funds radiation health studies.
