Today in the Department of Defense, Thursday, July 19, 2001

Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld is in Washington today. There are no public or media events on his schedule.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz and Lt. Gen. Ronald T. Kadish, director, Ballistic Missile Defense Organization , appear before the House Armed Services Committee today on national missile defense. See the Congressional schedule of events for details.

The next regular Department of Defense news briefing will be conducted today at 1:30 p.m. in the DoD briefing room, Pentagon 2E781. The briefer will be Rear Adm. Craig R. Quigley, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for public affairs.

Gen. Henry H. Shelton, chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, is visiting Qatar, Oman and India through tomorrow. See the press advisory for details.

U.S. soldiers and airmen from Germany and Italy are participating in the training exercise Rapid Guardian II in Kosovo through tomorrow. See the European Command web page for details.

The executive committee of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services is visiting military commands and meeting with service members in Alaska, Korea, Japan, Okinawa and Hawaii through July 29. See the news release for details.
