MCBS Profiles
Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS)
For general, non-technical audiences, the MCBS Highlights series offers interesting
insights into health care delivery, using the MCBS data. Because of the unique
coverage and depth of the MCBS, these MCBS Profiles can shed new light on health
care quality and expenditure issues in the Medicare population. Recent issues
addressing flu shot delivery, end-of-life expenditures, and more, are available
here.
For more technical audiences, the data dictionary and other quantitative aspects
of the survey are explained through this link

- Flu Shot Trends
in the Elderly Medicare Population (.pdf 166 KB)
Immunization
rates for influenza have been measured by the Medicare Current Beneficiary
Survey (MCBS) since its beginning in 1991. Despite a long-term upward trend,
the most recent data show a definite dip in the rate for the 2000-2001 flu
season. MCBS data are used to show a likely reason for this decline.
- Last Year of Life
Expenditures (.pdf 202 KB)
The total health expenditures of Medicare beneficiaries tend to increase dramatically
in their last years of life. While there are substantial increases in payments
by all sources, Medicare spending increases at the greatest rate. This change
in the distribution of payment sources is driven mainly by a tendency to more
intensive use of hospital inpatient services in the last three months of a
beneficiary's life.

research-related activities at the Agency, and important links to new
developments.
The MCBS Home
Page
is a continuous, multipurpose survey of a nationally representative sample of
aged, disabled, and institutionalized Medicare beneficiaries.
