Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration (EDA) Opportunities

The U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) announces FY2000 financial assistance opportunities under the Public Works and Economic Development Act (PWEDA) of 1965. PWEDA supports projects designed to alleviate conditions of substantial and persistent unemployment and underemployment in economically-distressed areas and regions of the Nation, and to address economic dislocations resulting from sudden and severe job losses. $360,550,000 is available and is allocated between 7 different program areas. Unless otherwise indicated in the Federal Register Announcement, applications are accepted on a continuous basis and will be processed as funds are available. In FY00, EDA will give priority consideration to projects that help communities achieve and sustain economic growth, including those that support the Administration's "New Markets" and "Liveable Communities" initiatives and the priorities of the Department of Commerce including, but not limited to: projects that support the development of new environmental technologies and techniques (for example: innovative material recycling, pollution control or treatment processes); sustainable development programs that will provide long-term economic benefits while promoting eco-efficiency; economic adjustment, especially in response to military base and Dept. of Energy facility closures and downsizing; projects in federally designated rural and urban Enterprise Communities and Empowerment Zones; projects that support EPA designated brownfield pilots and Brownfield Showcase Communities; projects that support the American Heritage Rivers Initiative; projects that support the economic development of Native American communities including Alaska Native Villages. For more info, go to the Federal Register Announcement for a list of the Economic Development Representatives in your Region. For general info on EDA, go to http://www.doc.gov/eda.
