Hello and welcome to the Department of Energy's Office
of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management's (OCRWM) website.
As the Director of OCRWM, I am excited to lead a program
of such significant national and international importance
— safe and permanent disposal of our nation’s
spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste.
On July 23, 2002, President George W. Bush signed House
Joint Resolution 87, allowing us to take the next
step in establishing a safe repository at the Yucca
Mountain site in Nevada.
House Joint Resolution 87 allows OCRWM to prepare a
license application to submit to the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission for construction of a repository at Yucca
Mountain. We are also developing a comprehensive transportation
plan for shipment of waste to the repository.
The mission for OCRWM.DOE.GOV is to provide users with
project updates, educational materials, and access to
thousands of technical documents. The Yucca Mountain
audience is broad, from the scientific and technical
community, to elected officials, and students needing
information for research papers. We hope to reach all
of you with a website that is easy to navigate. I encourage
you to browse and let us know what you think through
the Contact Us link. I look forward to sharing with
you more of my program plans, initiatives and successes
in the months ahead.
Dr. Margaret S. Y. Chu, Director
Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management
