Clint Murchison, Jr. was the owner of the Dallas Cowboys. He received an extortion letter in late October of 1977. He was instructed to drop off $20,000 at a University Park, Texas location. The Texas Commerce Bank of Houston, Texas claimed that Murchison failed to secure a $10,000 loan at the bank and wanted fraud charges brought against him. He repaid part of the loan and promised to make payments on the rest and the case was dropped. In 1985, he was also the subject of a fraud case involving the Empire Financial Corporation of Las Vegas. In 1966, Murchison held the lease of the Del Mar racing track, but a group of others were seeking to replace Murchison. Governor Brown had stated that he would not approve renewal of Murchison's contract for the Del Mar track.
