The Faculty
Early Career Development (CAREER) Program and
the Presidential
Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) provide
opportunities for relatively junior investigators to receive support for
the decelopment of their research and education activities.
The Professional
Opportunities for Women in Research and Education (POWRE),
a flexible program with choice of activities designed to provide academic
and professional opportunities for women in science and engineering.
The Research
Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program
provides supplements to Principal investigators so that they can add an
undergraduate student to their team.
The Small
Grants for Exploratory Research Program includes
an expedited review process designed to provide a rapid decision to the
Principal Investigator. The circumstances under which it can be used

The Grants
Opportunities for Academic Liasons with Industry (GOALI) Program is
designed to foster collaborations between academic groups of professors,
students, and representatives from industry.
The Small
Business Innovation Research Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and the
small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program are
each designed to create opportunities for research to occur in small businesses,
aided where appropriate, by academic collaborators.
The Major
Research Equipment Awards allow
institutions to purchase equipment that is more expensive than that typically
available on an Individual Investigator Award.
The Engineering
Research Centers and
the Science
and Technology Centers are
large, multi-investigator, multi-year awards with substantial industry
and education components in addition to a research component.
The Integrated
Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) Program supports
multi-disciplinary training groups. These might include graduate
students, undergraduate students, and post-doctoral students as well.
The Experimental
Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) is
designed to increase the research and development competitiveness of applicants
from states which have historically received lesser amounts of federal
funding.
The Combined
Research and Curriculum Development Program emphasizes
the need to incorporate exciting research advances in important technology
areas into the upper level undergraduate and graduate engineering curricula.
