Age-adjustment

Where specifically noted, data are adjusted to control for age differences in the distributions of different populations.  All age-adjusted data in DATA2010 are adjusted to the 2000 US standard population1.  The specific age groups used in the adjustment are shown in the operational definition for each measure.  Operational definition files can be accessed from DATA2010 under the selection, 'Objective Operational definitions by focus area'.  Age adjustment groups are also available under the 'ICD-10 codes and age adjustment groups' option from the DATA2010 main menu.

ICD-9/10
The International Classification of Diseases (ICD), published by the World Health Organization, establishes a structure for translating medical conditions into a statistical classification system.  There have been 10 revisions to the ICD codes since 1900.  Healthy People 2010 morbidity and mortality baseline data that used ICD coding procedures (primarily 1998 data) were established using ICD-9 codes.  The 10th revision of the ICD was implemented for mortality classification in 1999.  For ease of future comparisons, all mortality baseline data based on the ICD coding procedures have been revised to 1999.  At this time, the morbidity data are still classified using the ICD 9-CM coding system.  ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes are available under the 'ICD-10 codes and age adjustment groups' option from the DATA2010 main menu.
