Volpe Center Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Welcome to the Volpe Center Geographic Information Systems (GIS) homepage. We specialize in the application of GIS technology to transportation. The Volpe Center's GIS activities can be grouped into four general categories:

  1. GIS Evaluation and Implementation - The Volpe Center's GIS Group provides technical support to clients who request help identifying specific agency activities that could be enhanced by GIS. The support also includes evaluating alternative GIS software, procuring and installing an initial GIS capability, providing limited training, integrating agency databases into the GIS, and developing agency-specific demonstrations for senior managers and other parts of the organizations.

  2. GIS Decision Support System Development - The Volpe Center works with clients to create applications that combine various databases and transportation analysis procedures on a GIS platform. These applications can help facilitate data retrieval and integration, and provide graphical displays of analysis results. This is done by tailoring commercial off-the-shelf GIS software, developing new or enhanced analysis procedures and display capabilities, and creating user-friendly software interfaces to produce a customized GIS decision support system to meet specific application requirements.

  3. Spatial Database Development - The potential benefits of GIS in transportation applications are limited by the quality of transportation network and related geographic databases. The Volpe Center assists agencies in constructing these national transportation network databases, and in developing plans for ongoing maintenance and dissemination of the databases in conjunction with other Federal interagency data sharing activities.

  4. GIS Technical Support - Many projects at the Volpe Center, while not primarily classified as GIS activities, nevertheless may require particular spatial data, spatial analyses, or map displays which can be produced most efficiently through available GIS technology. The Volpe Center's GIS Group provides technical support to these projects on request.
