The Energy Policy Act requires Federal agencies to purchase alternative fuel vehicles and alternative fuels. DOE's Alternative Fuels Data Center is a one stop shop for all your alternative fuel and vehicle information needs. This site has more than 3,000 documents in its database, an interactive fuel station mapping system, listings of available alternative fuel vehicles, links to related Web sites, and much more.

The Defense Energy Support Center offers an information web site about different types of alternative fuels. Called the Alternative Fuels Information Station, or AFIS, it contains tutorials about the Energy Policy Act requirements, ethanol (E85), biodiesel, and alternative fuel logistics. DESC is developing a tutorial about hydrogen fuel.

Even when not purchasing alternative fuel vehicles, agencies can purchaser "greener" vehicles by specifying good fuel economy and environmental performance. EPA and DOE produce the Fuel Economy Guide to help car buyers choose the most fuel-efficient vehicle that meets their needs. EPA compiles the fuel economy data, and DOE publishes them in print and on the Web at www.fueleconomy.gov. The Fuel Economy Guide provides useful information for car owners and automobile dealers. Is your car environmentally preferable? What are some of the latest developments in car and fuel technology? The web site provides answers to these questions, along with information regarding gas mileage tips, gas prices, advanced technology, and the importance of fuel economy. Users can also find and compare cars by gas mileage, greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution ratings, and safety information.

EPA's Green Vehicle Guide provides information about the environmental performance of vehicles based on emissions levels/air pollution and fuel economy values/global warming impacts. Users can look up specific vehicles or browse through current year's vehicles sorted by ratings. Data can be found based on vehicle make, vehicle specifications, sales area, underhood vehicle identification number, emissions and air pollution, global warming, and fuel economy. The guide does not account for other environmental factors, such as recyclability of the vehicle, or other factors that purchasers consider, such as safety, cost, or driving performance.

The Center for a New American Dream, in conjunction with the National Association of Counties, published a fact sheet on hybrid vehicles, Harnessing the Power of Advanced Fleet Vehicles: A Hybrid Electric Vehicle Fact Sheet for Government Official. This document is targeted to local and state government officials, and describes hybrid fleet applications, operations, benefits and costs.
