2004 Festival Itinerary

Most of the festival events occur on the refuge, but many events are held off the refuge, either at the Byron Fish Hatchery Watchable Wildlife Area or the Great Salt Plains State Park. Download the map for direction information.

Refuge Management Tour (1 hr) - Take a tour onto closed areas of the refuge to see wildlife management projects. Learn about moist-soil management, prescribed fire and more! Limited Seating - Call (580) 626-4794 for reservations.

"Leave No Trace" Land Ethics - Learn about the Leave No Trace land ethics program and how you can participate in this nation-wide program, get training or improve your land ethics!

Retriever Dog Demonstration - John Amico of Deep Fork Retrievers is a nationally renowned retriever trainer. John has been training hunting retrievers for over 25 years. He has titled over 100 dogs, produced dogs for numerous guide services, and provided hundreds of hunters with refined hunting companions.

Bird Banding - Bird banding is an excellent way to track migrations and study nesting success. Birds of all sizes are banded (or ringed, as they call it in Europe) - from sparrows to cranes.

2nd Annual Youth Art Contest - The 2nd Annual Youth Art Contest was done with participants from Alva, Burlington, Cherokee, Medford, Pond Creek, Timberlake and Wakita Schools. View the winning artwork! Get a souvenir from the festival with the winning artwork of your choice!

Youth Archery Contest - Sponsored by the Cherokee Strip Archery Club - All youth to 18 yrs old are eligible. Age divisions: Cub Class: 12 & Under, Youth Class: 13 & 14 yrs and Young Adult Class: 15 - 18 yrs. Bows will be available to use.

Youth Casting Contest - Sponsored by the Byron Fish Hatchery - Contestants can bring their own pole or the refuge will provide a pole for them to use. Open to all youth under the age of 18. All equipment provided by refuge.
