The SELECT Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial

SELECT, the largest-ever prostate cancer prevention trial, is testing selenium and vitamin E (alone or in combination) to see if these supplements may prevent prostate cancer. SELECT began enrolling patients on August 21, 2001, and hopes to enroll 32,400 men over a five-year period.

There are 435 SELECT sites throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada.

Recruitment snapshot

In the first two years of recruitment (August 21, 2001, to August 20, 2003):

  • 24,639 men have been enrolled, or 76 percent of the total enrollment goal.
  • Of these, 3,526 are African Americans, comprising 14 percent of the enrolled total

The median age of SELECT participants is 62. The oldest participant enrolled at the age of 93.

A diverse group of men have joined SELECT. As of August 20, 2003:

  • 79 percent are white.
  • 13 percent are African-American.
  • 5 percent are Hispanic (non-African-American).
  • 1 percent are Hispanic (African-American).
  • 1 percent are Asian/Pacific Islander.

Incidence of prostate cancer

  • In men, prostate cancer is the most common cancer after skin cancer.
  • Prostate cancer is the second highest cause of cancer death in men in the U.S.
  • African-American men in the U.S. have the highest prostate cancer rates in the world.
