Matz to Keynote Pennsylvania’s
Small Credit Union Conference

Survival of Small CUs a Key Topic October 16 in Harrisburg

Oct. 14, 2004, Harrisburg, Pa. – In the keynote address to the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association’s Credit Union Development Conference, NCUA Board Member Debbie Matz will engage credit union officials in a discussion of ways that small credit unions can not only survive, but thrive in the future:

Who: NCUA Board Member Debbie Matz

What: Credit Union Development Conference for credit unions with assets up to $10 million

Where: Wyndham Hotel Harrisburg - Hershey, 4650 Lindle Rd., Harrisburg, Pa.

When: Saturday, Oct. 16, 9:15 – 10:30 AM

Why: “Small credit unions are vitally important to the entire credit union community,” Matz explains. “Small credit unions tend to be located in neighborhoods where there are no other insured financial institutions; they provide alternatives to predatory lenders; they serve people of modest means; and they are the icon of credit unions for some state and federal legislators who may be thinking about taxing credit unions. If we all recognize the importance of small credit unions, we can work together on initiatives to keep more small credit unions alive and thriving.”

To attend, contact the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association at 1-800-932-0661.

Recommended by Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD), Matz was named as a recess appointee to the NCUA Board in January 2002 and nominated to a seat on the Board on February 27, 2002. The U.S. Senate confirmed her on March 22, 2002. As part of the NCUA Board, Ms. Matz oversees the regulation of federal credit unions and the administration of the federal insurance fund covering approximately 9,500 credit unions in the U.S.

A public service veteran of nearly 25 years, Matz is a member of three credit unions and resides in McLean, Va. with her husband and two children. Before her appointment to the NCUA Board, Matz was appointed by President Clinton as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Administration in the Department of Agriculture.
