NCUA Launches Express Communication Service

New e-mail subscription tool designed to enhance agency efficiency and communications

May 26, 2004, Alexandria, Va.—The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) announced that its Express e-mail subscription service was activated today.

Express is available online through www.ncua.gov and offers credit unions the option of an expedited, targeted electronic retrieval of the vast majority (18 categories) of NCUA publications.

"Express was designed to be a resourceful tool for expediting information and will enhance the agency’s communications with credit unions,” said Chairman JoAnn Johnson, who has made communication improvements a key initiative. She appointed a team comprised of the NCUA’s Office of the Chief Financial Officer, Office of Examination and Insurance, and the Office of the Chief Information Officer, to develop the electronic publication delivery tool.

"Express service offers federally insured credit unions the opportunity to receive most NCUA publications electronically within hours of release rather than waiting days to receive a hard-copy document through the mail. In addition, this tool offers flexibility to assist credit unions in managing the flow of information by providing need-to-know documents simultaneously to numerous officials within the credit union,” added Chairman Johnson. “This is another way to improve efficiency and maintain wise use of agency resources.”

When the NCUA issues a document such as an agency press release, Letter to Credit Unions, or Regulatory Alert, the Express alerts subscribers and provides an electronic link to the document. Credit unions officials self-manage their Express password and determine which individuals within the organization receive the various types of documents available. For example, a credit union could select to have NCUA Accounting Bulletins automatically e-mailed to the controller and/or chief financial officer and members of the supervisory committee, while NCUA regulation changes could be automatically e-mailed to the president and board members.

At present, the Express is available for authorized federally insured credit union representatives only. A password is required to access Express and subscribers must have Internet access to link from the e-mail and download the designated publication. Express is free and available for all federally insured credit unions. Credit unions may subscribe online at www.ncua.gov.

The National Credit Union Administration is the independent federal agency that regulates, charters and supervises federal credit unions. NCUA, with the backing of the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, operates and manages the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund insuring the deposits of more than 82 million account holders in all federal credit unions and the overwhelming majority of state-chartered credit unions.
