Matz Names Credit Union Speakers for
PALS Workshop Featuring Senator Clinton
Registration Open for Free Workshop on October 11 in Rochester, N.Y.
August 31, 2004, Rochester, N.Y. – NCUA Board Member Debbie
Matz has put together a diverse lineup of speakers to join U.S. Senator
Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) at NCUA’s free Partnering and Leadership
Successes (PALS) workshop on Oct. 11 in Rochester.
Credit union leaders from across New York State will present successful
strategies for “Serving the Underserved Without Losing Your Bottom
Line.” Panel discussions will include perspectives from small,
mid-size and large credit unions, with different types of charters
located both in urban and rural areas.
“These diverse panels will demonstrate how credit unions of
all sizes and all charters can effectively serve the underserved,” Matz
related. “Whether converting to community charters, adding underserved
areas, or reaching out to everyone in their current field of membership,
these credit unions offer shining examples of innovations that attract
new members who are not being served by other insured financial institutions.”
The first panel will focus on “Meeting Critical Needs” – the
first step in helping the underserved withstand financial emergencies,
build good credit, and make life-changing choices. These panelists
will describe needed services such as risk-based loans, payday loan
alternatives, and financial education:
- Melissa Marquez, Loan Officer, Genesee Co-op Federal Credit Union
($6 million), Rochester
- Ron Ehrenreich, CEO, Syracuse Cooperative FCU ($9 million), Syracuse
- Stephen Gardner, CEO, GHS FCU ($81 million), Binghamton
- Kirk Kordeleski, CEO, Bethpage FCU ($1.8 billion), Long Island
The second panel will focus on “Building Members’ Wealth” – the
ultimate goal of all credit unions. These panelists will describe wealth-building
services such as affordable mortgages, member business loans, and international
remittances:
- Pablo DeFilippi, Board President, Lower East Side People’s
FCU ($12 million), New York
- Cynthia Vaughan, CEO, Rockland Employees FCU ($44 million), Orangeburg
- Bill Myers, CEO, Alternatives FCU ($48 million), Ithaca
- Gail Bedell, CEO, WCTA FCU ($235 million), Sodus
Senator Clinton will deliver the closing keynote address and answer
questions from the audience. To view the agenda and register for the
workshop, visit www.ncua.gov, look under “PALS Registration,” then

The workshop will be co-hosted by The Summit FCU in Rochester, the
National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU), the National
Federation of Community Development Credit Unions, and the New York
State Credit Union League. The Summit CEO Mike Vadala and New York
League President Bill Mellin will join Matz in making opening remarks.
NAFCU President Fred Becker will facilitate the first panel, and Federation
Executive Director Cliff Rosenthal will facilitate the second panel.
PALS workshops are open to credit unions of all sizes and charter
types. Potential partners from organizations based in underserved communities
are also invited to share their ideas and network with credit union
officials.
