NCUA Chairman Calls for Summit on
Credit Union Capital

October 19th Summit to Focus on All Capital Issues Affecting Credit Unions

September 16, 2004 Alexandria, Va. – National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Chairman JoAnn Johnson announced today that the agency will host a Summit on Credit Union Capital at NCUA’s Alexandria headquarters on Tuesday, October 19th at 9:00 a.m.

“All issues relating to capital for America’s credit unions will be on the table,” said Chairman Johnson. “Capital is a critical issue affecting all institutions – both natural person and corporate credit unions. We need to expand the dialogue and bring credit union officials together as we explore safe and sound opportunities for capital.”

NCUA is inviting the following organizations to present credit union institution officials to address the summit: Association of Corporate Credit Unions, Credit Union National Association, National Association of Federal Credit Unions, National Association of State Credit Union Supervisors, and the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions.

NCUA Board Members and senior staff will attend the summit. Each organization will be allotted up to 30 minutes total with a maximum of three presenter(s) for oral statements. The organizations should submit participant names by October 14.

The agency encourages comments regarding capital to be submitted in writing. Individuals preferring to provide written comments may file them with the Secretary of the Board. Written comments may be received before, during or after the forum, but must be received no later than November 19. Mail comments and participation requests to Mary Rupp, Secretary of the Board, National Credit Union Administration, 1775 Duke Street, Alexandria, Va. 22314, faxed to 703-518-6319, or e-mailed to regcomments@ncua.gov.

The National Credit Union Administration is the independent federal agency that regulates, charters and supervises federal credit unions. NCUA, with the backing of the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, operates and manages the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, insuring the savings of more than 83 million account holders in all federal credit unions and the overwhelming majority of state-chartered credit unions.
