NCUA to host Access Across America
Economic Empowerment Summit in Tampa, Florida – October 14th

September 17, 2004, Alexandria, VA – National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Chairman JoAnn Johnson announced today that the agency will sponsor an Access Across America Economic Empowerment Summit in Tampa, Florida on October 14.

The free, one day event will focus on federal resources available to credit unions. Credit unions in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi are invited to participate.

“NCUA’s fourth summit will bring together the public and private sectors to discuss the important issues of economic empowerment. The summit will provide an overview of resources available to credit unions, which may assist them in their outreach efforts to promote financial education, homeownership, and member business lending,” said NCUA Chairman Johnson. “NCUA looks forward to joining with the credit union officials and volunteers in the southeast, who are making a difference in the lives of their members and empowering families toward the American Dream of financial self-sufficiency.”

The summit is designed for credit union senior staff, as well as board volunteers. The purpose of this summit is to enhance the abilities of those credit unions to expand financial services to their members and with a special emphasis of partnering with other agencies and non-profit organizations.

Chairman Johnson continued, “We look forward to building on the success of recent summits held in the mid- and southwestern regions, and hope to open the potential partnership opportunities for more credit unions to expand or establish new initiatives.”

Featured panels of government agencies and potential non-profit partners addressing key topics, include:

• Financial Education
• Homeownership
• Member Business Lending
• Partnership Opportunities for Credit Unions

Also, there will be a session regarding grant writing techniques and serving underserved areas.

Coupled with the broad program topics and top leaders in government, the participating agencies include the Departments of Agriculture, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, and the Treasury. Also, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Export-Import Bank of the United States, Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, and Small Business Administration will participate in panel discussions.

Access Across America was established to promote and facilitate the extension of affordable financial services to individuals and communities across America.
