Islet Cell Resource Centers

With support from NCRR, 10 Islet Cell Resource (ICR) Centers isolate, purify, and characterize human pancreatic islets for subsequent transplantation into patients with type I diabetes. The ICR centers procure whole pancreata and acquire relevant data about donors; improve islet isolation and purification techniques; distribute islets for use in approved clinical protocols; and perfect the methods of storage and shipping. In this way, the centers optimize the viability, function, and availability of islets and help clinical researchers capitalize on the recently reported successes in islet transplantation.

The NCRR Division for Clinical Research Resources (DCRR) supports the ICR centers, which will be electronically linked through the Administrative and Bioinformatics Coordinating Center (ABCC). The ABCC, located at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California, provides database and other informatics support to the ICR centers to give the research community a single entry point to the program. Qualified clinical researchers from not-for-profit, domestic institutions may request islets by submitting a written application to the director of the ABCC.
