Earth Images From Space

Photographic images from space provide a global perspective and show the limits of our world dominated by water and shielded from space by a thin atmosphere. From space, Earth is seen as a whole structure, the land, oceans, and atmosphere that provide our life-supporting environment.

The NASA Image Exchange (NIX)  - Visit NIX, a web-based search engine that puts over 300,000 NASA online images from the various NASA centers at your fingertips.

Shuttle Radar Topography Mission  - The Mission to Map the World - These are the most precise pictures of the world ever produced. The goal of the SRTM is to map 80 percent of the Earth's landmass in unprecedented detail.

Visible Earth  - If a picture says a thousand words, then NASA's website, Visible Earth, speaks volumes about our planet. This website provides a searchable directory of images, visualizations and animations of Earth.

Earth Science Picture of the Day  - Each day this website will feature a new Earth science image with a descriptive caption. Search the site by keyword or browse by general topic or related field.

Images from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center SVS  - The Scientific Visualization (SVS) Studio at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center offers this outstanding collection of images. Some of the listings include Urban Growth, LandSat, TERRA, Floods, Hurricanes, TRACE, SeaWifs, TRMM, Astronomy, GOES, and others.

Earth from Space  - View some of the best images from the NASA Space Shuttle Earth Observations Photography database. These images were compiled to illustrate interesting Earth features and processes as seen by Astronauts from space. You may select images by geographic location or area of interest such as cities, Earth landscapes, or Earth's water habitats.

Cities from Space  - This site contains beautiful, color photographs of Earth taken by astronauts from aboard the space shuttle. Choose a continent and then select a city for an image, or the form search allows you to name a city and the database will locate the image.

The Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth  - The complete collection of NASA's Earth imagery contains all images taken of the Earth by the astronauts since 1961.

Oceanography from the Space Shuttle  - A pictorial survey of oceanic phenomena visible to the naked eye from space. Originally published in 1989, it is now out of print and only available on this web site.

GOES Interactive Weather Satellite Imagery  - This site provides real-time weather satellite pictures of Earth with an interactive viewer. You can animate satellite views at low-resolution as well as get image sequences on-demand for your point of interest. Images are broadcast every 30 minutes by the GOES weather satellite and posted by the Global Hydrology and Climate Center (GHCC).

Related Materials on Spacelink:

Instructional Materials: Exploring Earth From Space - This NASA educational lithograph set includes an educator guide and pictures of Earth taken from space as part of the NASA EarthKAM program. This incredible resource will enhance studies of science, mathematics, technology, and geography.

Related NASA Internet Sites:

SeaWifs Image Gallery  - The Pulse of the Planet is the SeaWifs Image Library. Images herein are provided by the SeaWiFS Project, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center and ORBIMAGE.

Earth Sciences Pictures  - This site has it all. View recent images of winter storms over the United States, hurricane turbulance, smoke, fires, ozone layers, and many other fascinating views of planet Earth.

Natural Hazards  - Check out this site for images of natural hazards around the Earth. Dust & Smoke, Fires, Floods, Severe Storms, Volcanoes, and Unique Imagery.

Landsat Images of the United States Capitals  - NASA's Observatorium offers this interesting web page. From a map of the United States choose a state. An image of the capital taken by the Landsat satellite will appear. Students will have fun identifying bodies of water, vegetation, and landforms.

Trees from Space  - How would the world look from space if the trees, fields, lakes, and mountains were each different colors? The Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite launched on November 21, 2000 to test some very advanced new instruments. Hyperion will be so sensitive that when its data is processed by computers, we will be able to see clearly where one kind of tree ends and another begins! Visit this website from the Space Place for an easy-to-understand explanation of this new satellite.

NASA's ISS EarthKAM  - ISS EarthKAM is a NASA sponsored program in which students remotely operate a digital camera that provides stunning, high quality photographs of our planet taken from the International Space Station. The collection contains Earth images which can be searched by country, mission, or geographical feature. Visit the Educators Main Page for ISS EarthKAM activities for the classroom.

The Ultimate Field Trip  - Astronaut Kathryn D. Sullivan's Ultimate Field Trip contains incredible views of earth from space along with her observations on studying the earth from space. Come along and visit Kathy as she takes a look out of her "office" window.

Earth Observing System Educators' Visual Materials  - The purpose of this slide package is to help educators and researchers gain access to the most-recent space-based observations NASA has obtained regarding Earth system science. NASA hopes that this package proves useful and plans periodically to update this set as additional observational and analytical data become available as part of its Earth Science Program.

Virtually Hawaii  - This project has assembled a data base of satellite, space shuttle, and aircraft remote sensing images covering the state of Hawaii. These images will be available via the Internet, along with hand-held ground photographs and descriptive and educational text. Come take a "Virtual Field Trip", which takes you on different tours around the islands.

NASA Multimedia Gallery  - This website has a great selection of NASA's images, video, and interactive features in one location.
