Implementation Team

The Alaska Regional Implementation Team (AKRIT) has become an effective multi-agency working group actively involving the resource, military and infrastructure agencies. The Alaska Regional Implementation Team's strategy focuses on the restoration of freshwater anadromous fish habitat, nearshore habitats, and the protection of migratory bird and marine mammal populations. They have recently implemented several innovative, collaborative projects including the Kenai River Resource Protection and Education Project and the Duck Creek Watershed Restoration Project. Last year they worked to establish a strong program with the Alaska SeaLife Center, which was subsequently designated Coastal America's ninth Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center in September 1998. As host to the 1998 Coastal America Annual Retreat, the team actively participated in workgroup discussions and followed-up on implementing many of the new ideas developed at the retreat. In fact, they are now using hydroacoustic technology developed by the Navy, which was used to map seagrasses in Narragansett Bay during a previous Coastal America project, in Alaska for similar purposes.
