Implementation Team

The Northwest Region of Coastal America in the past year has received the Coastal America National Principles endorsement of the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon as a Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center (CELC). Mr. Phillip Lammi of the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence, Western Regional Office is serving as the new chair of the Northwest Regional Implementation Team (NWRIT). The NWRIT nominated the Goldsborough Creek Restoration project, located in Shelton Washington to Coastal America for endorsement. The Goldsborough Creek Restoration project involves partnering between Simpson Timber Company, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, Service - Region 1, and the Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District to remove the timber mill pond dam, construct a series of weirs forming steps in the stream (establishing more gradual contours and gradient), anchor these weirs with rocks and use of natural material and native plantings in the streambed near the weirs to enhance fish and wildlife habitat. The Squazin Indian Tribe, City of Shelton and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife support this project. Further, there are many watersheds affecting the Coasts in Oregon and Washington and the NWRIT is concerned and will be evaluating how to address watershed management and conservation of coastal habitat.
