In 1996 the Penobscot River was identified as one of our nation's "ten most endangered rivers," by American Rivers, Inc., as a result of conditions created by the obstructions to fish passage, related flow problems which dominated the condition of the river's fish habitat, and the potential of future habitat problems. The Penobscot River has also been nominated as an "American Heritage River" in response to President Clinton's 1997 State of the Union address to the nation, by the Penobscot Indian Nation and by others.
Ecological Benefits -Restoring the Atlantic Salmon runs, native and sea run brook trout habitat to the entire Souadabscook Watershed. -Restored striped bass, river herring and alewives for commercial and sport purposes -Improved water quality aeration and decreased temperatures of water due to restoration of natural riverine conditions in lieu of an algae laden, shallow, stagnant impoundment.
Recreational Benefits - Restored Natural White Water Conditions, due to the ledges at three dam sites, will provide a natural, picturesque, useable and highly visible landscape in the town of Hampden. - Removal of the building, fish-way and power generation structures improved visual, aesthetic quality. -Fishing opportunities for trout, striped bass, rainbow smelt and Atlantic salmon has been significantly improved. These are highly valued economic and recreation species. -The aesthetic "canoe-ability" and kayak use of the stream has been improved.
